History

For more than 45 years, students have been choosing ELS for their Intensive English studies, both in the US and around the world. In Oman, ELS is the market leader in Muscat, Salalah, Sohar, and Sur.

ELS
ELS Language Centers came into being as the US State Department-affiliated English Education Institute in the 1950's. In 1961 we became a private company and since then we have helped nearly 3 million people acquire English language skills suitable for everyday communication and for academic study in American colleges and universities. Our history is long and broad. The 3 million people we have taught came from over 140 different countries, and we are still growing. Currently we have 80 centers, the majority located in the US and the rest in 16 other countries around the world. ELS Language Centers was introduced in Oman under joint-venture control and guidance of the International Training and Educational Services company and it is the long and proven experience in English language training that gave ITES the

motivation to bring ELS to Muscat. With hard work and commitment from our management and teachers as well as the loyal support of our clients in the government and business sectors, the need for more teaching space was assessed by opening an annex in Al-Hail. Another branch was opened to serve the needs of the community in Salalah in 2003, then again in Sohar in 2005, and most recently in 2007 a new ocean-front branch opened in Sur. With 5 Centers in the main urban areas of the Sultanate, ELS is well positioned to help our students and clients in a variety of language training needs.

In addition to General English programs provided, ELS has implemented two successful college and university foundation year programs for the Tourism College and Nizwa University; and most recently a joint project with the Arab Open University in Muscat has given us the opportunity to run the AOU foundation English classes in remote areas such as Nizwa, Sohar, and Salalah. A variety of ESP programs have also been developed and executed with companies such as Nawras, Oman Mobile, Bank Dhofar and Royal Oman Police as well as with several Ministries in the Sultanate.

In early 2006, ELS Oman became a testing partner with the world’s largest language assessment company, ETS, to deliver the new TOEFL iBT exam. With our language programs and ESP options in place, ELS Oman has expanded its portfolio to include a stream of academic programs to guide students through a multi-level course in order to achieve successful results on this difficult and important exam.
